“Certain vertical and diagonal works are made of the Mexican Pacific Ocean stones but are neither entirely of the Cantamar series nor Tierra Buena. They appear to drift with the ocean’s chaotic currents, as they reach for the surface, seeming to echo not only the imprint of softly billowing smoke, the sway of the wind and the waves, but the curvaceous stalks and flourishes and fractal fingers of the surreal botanical and arboreal beings alive in the underwater landscape. The sensation of buoyancy the artist feels while spending time underwater is connected at a fundamental energetic and material level to those same currents and all that floats upon them.”

“AS I SPENT MORE TIME UNDERWATER, MY COLLABORATION WITH THESE STONES MOVED FROM A BIOMORPHIC EDGE TO A FEELING OF BOUYANCY. THIS INFUENCE BECAME EQUALLY APPARENT TO ME IN THE SMOKE DRAWINGS.” WD
